The band called The Beast will be coming to East Wake Middle to do an assembly for the 6th graders on February 21, 2019 at 8:25 a.m. (parents are invited too). We are pleased to have received a partial grant from the United Arts Council of Raleigh to help pay the costs for our wonderful cultural arts program this year. Kudos to 6th grade parent Secret Sutton for heading up our Cultural Arts PTA Committee this year!
The Beast is an innovative and electrifying hip hop and jazz ensemble. Students will learn elements of Storytelling, Improvisation and Call and Response in American Music through a brilliant mix of TedTalk-style interactive lecture with a live band. During SANKOFA, students will learn about oral tradition through the West African storyteller/poet known as the Griot; explore coded language in Spirituals; discover improvisation in Jazz; learn call and response in Reggae, and party with their teachers to classic Hip Hop.
Developed by Pierce Freelon, a UNC and NC Central COLLEGE PROFESSOR, and hip hop artist,, the curriculum is entertaining and informative for all ages. SANKOFA is tailored by tone, vocabulary and interactions consistently lauded as "the best assembly EVER" by students and faculty alike. Schools who booked SANKOFA in 2015-16 said: "The Beast is a truly engaging musical group which teaches African-American history in a fun, effective way. They are wonderful musicians and story-tellers."
